Electric Vehicle Charger installed in Norway, July 2014
In what might be the first municipal electric vehicle (EV) charger in the state, the town of Norway has installed an EV charging station behind the information kiosk on Main Street. The charger was donated to the Center for an Ecology-Based Economy (CEBE) by Revision Energy and was installed by CEBE Advisory Board member Fred Garbo and Dennis Yates, Norway’s Electrical Inspector. Electricity is provided by the town of Norway with the agreement that if it proves too costly for the town, CEBE will install solar power to offset the cost.
Garbo, along with Zizi Vlaun of CEBE painted the parking space with a custom stencil indicating the charger location and to deter non-electric vehicles from using the parking spot. Signage is also posted, both at the site and on Main Street to direct EV users to the station.
By installing the charger in downtown Norway it will encourage EV users from Portland, Bethel, Conway or anywhere within a 50-60 mile radius to visit Norway and be able to top up their batteries for the return trip while enjoying the amenities of downtown. The charger location is identified on the online Chargepoint and Plugshare maps that are frequently referenced by EV users nationwide.
Electric vehicles are becoming more popular each year as charging infrastructure improves and battery technology becomes more efficient and affordable. Currently there are over 230,000 plug-in EVs and Plug-in Hybrid cars in the United States, thanks to federal rebates of up to $7,500 and various State and local incentives. Maine does not offer EV incentives at this time.
The popular Nissan Leaf gets an equivalent of over 150 miles per gallon, and can go up to ninety miles on a charge. The high end Tesla EV has a range of over 200 miles. Combined with renewable electricity, such as solar or wind, electric vehicles represent a viable clean transportation option unheard of just a few years ago, especially for commuters and others who make many short trips.
